The Human Animal Bond

CE Hours 1

About this course

Over 70% of homes in the US report housing a pet, and 80% of those homes report animals are considered family members. Accounting for our client’s relationships with their animals not only acknowledges that bond, but also can incorporate that from a systems perspective. Learning the therapeutic role of animals can also be used to collaborate with them as an intervention in some settings. This course provides a primer in veterinary social work and will describe the therapeutic roles animals play in our lives. We will define specific terminology to these various roles and the power of the human-animal bond for clients. This course will discuss interventions and initiatives to support this powerful bond within the social work profession.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify various roles animals play in our lives for comfort, emotional support, and service.
  • Articulate correct terminology used to explain the various roles of animals.
